Erie, Colorado has deep roots in our state, primarily focused on the coal mining industry. As with many Front Range communities, coal mining and metal mining drew in pioneers and families looking to start a new life in the largely undeveloped areas. Water is a valuable and often temporary resource in Colorado and Erie gets its name from the Erie canal.
Early railroad construction in the Northern Coalfield brought the Boulder Valley line in 1871. A line now served the new town of Erie. It became Colorado’s largest producer for a time, and it became an important coal town.
